Dopo aver partecipato alla consultazione della Commissione Europea sulla strategia farmaceutica, Competere partecipa all’azione congiunta portata avanti insieme al Geneva Network, all’Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), all’Istituto per la Competitività (I-Com) e alla Foundation for Economic & Industrial Research chiedendo al Commissario per la Salute e la Sicurezza Alimentare, Stella Kyriakides, di agire su quattro aree prioritarie per il Piano d’Azione europeo. La Comissione dovrebbe concentrarsi, al fine di mantenere la competitività dell’Europa e garantire che l’innovazione correlata alla salute soddisfi le esigenze future della popolazione europea, sui seguenti punti:

• Mantenere standard elevati di protezione della proprietà intellettuale (PI) per promuovere la crescita economica e proteggere la competitività globale dell’UE
• Rafforzare l’ecosistema dell’innovazione dell’UE assicurando che tutti gli istituti di ricerca finanziati con fondi pubblici possano concedere in licenza e trarre profitto dalla loro ricerca
• Riformare il sistema dei brevetti per rafforzare gli incentivi alla R&S per le malattie dell’invecchiamento e altre esigenze insoddisfatte
• Garantire che il GDPR non presenti una barriera allo sviluppo di farmaci basato sui dati nell’UE.

ENGLISH VERSION (COMPETERE’S CONTRIBUTION TO EU’S PHARMACEUTICALS STRATEGY)

After participating in the European Commission public consultation on the new plan for Pharmaceuticals, Competere is again contributing to the debate over the EU pharmaceutical strategy. Being part of an informal coalition of international civil society organisations interested in innovation policy, together with Geneva Network, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), Istituto per la Competitività (I-Com) and Foundation for Economic & Industrial Research, we wrote a letter to the Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides. 

The letter briefly elaborates four areas we believe the Roadmap should focus on in order to retain Europe’s competitiveness and ensure health-related innovation meets the future needs of Europe’s population:

• Maintain high standards of IP protection to promote economic growth and protect the EU’s global competitiveness
• Strengthen the EU’s innovation ecosystem by ensuring all publicly-funded research institutions can license and profit from their research
• Reform the patent system to strengthen R&D incentives for the diseases of ageing and other unmet needs
• Ensure GDPR does not present a barrier to data-driven drug development in the EU.
