COMPETERE.EU: “PALM OIL BUCKS THE TREND ON DEFORESTATION”

The palm oil industry is “bucking the trend of increasing exploitation of primary rainforests witnessed in the past two years,” commented Pietro Paganini, in response to the latest data from Global Forest Watch (GFW).

“Unfortunately, the deforestation process is on the rise. Between 2021 and 2022, 4.1 million hectares of forests worldwide were lost,” stated Paganini, “with Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo being the most affected countries. In contrast, the four major palm oil producers (Indonesia, Malaysia, Colombia, and Guatemala) have successfully implemented solutions that synthesize economic interests, climate change, and food security.”

Based on data analysis, Competere observes that the top four importers in Europe (namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Colombia, and Guatemala) have already adopted successful deforestation-fighting policies. “The corrective actions, employed through the aim of achieving negative CO2 emissions by 2030, have led to a significant reduction in forest loss.”
