Italy’s agri-food industry is facing a serious threat from African swine fever (ASF). Though less visible in Europe compared to Asia and Africa, ASF has now spread across the continent, endangering the core of Italy’s cured meats industry—a key pillar of the nation’s economy. Originating from wild boars, the virus has made its way into pig farms, raising concerns over food security and the quality of raw materials. While ASF is not transmissible to humans, its economic toll is severe: rising inflation and international export bans have resulted in a monthly loss of 20 million euros in exports.

In response to this crisis, Italy appointed Giovanni Filippini as the special commissioner for African swine fever, a move welcomed by industry stakeholders, who are also advocating for additional support such as tax credits and VAT reductions. However, temporary solutions are not enough. It’s crucial to invest in stricter controls and foster international cooperation to protect the agri-food sector and reassure consumers about the continued excellence of Made in Italy products.
