Today We Celebrate World Olive Day: A Millennia-Old Tradition Enriching Mediterranean Tables and Cultures. The olive tree, a symbol of longevity, produces the fruit from which extra virgin olive oil—often referred to as “green gold”—is derived. This oil is far more than just an ingredient; it is a true ally for health, a driver of economic growth, and a cornerstone of the Mediterranean Diet.
A HEALTH ALLY
Scientific research has long confirmed what has been known for centuries: extra virgin olive oil (EVO) is a genuine elixir of health. But what makes it so special? A recent study sponsored by the Fondazione ETS Foundation – Istituto Nutrizionale Carapelli uncovered the genetic mechanisms behind its health benefits. The study demonstrated that diets rich in EVO, with its high polyphenol content, are associated with healthier metabolic profiles.
This oil, predominantly made up of monounsaturated fatty acids—especially oleic acid—is a potent protector of cardiovascular health. It reduces LDL (the so-called “bad cholesterol”) while maintaining stable levels of HDL (“good cholesterol”). Additionally, it is rich in fat-soluble vitamins, particularly vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative damage and helps preserve skin health.
A NUTRACEUTICAL FOCUS
Extra virgin olive oil is an excellent example of a nutraceutical food—one that not only nourishes but also provides therapeutic and protective benefits for the body. With its high levels of polyphenols and other bioactive compounds, EVO acts as a natural supplement. Studies have shown that regular consumption helps combat oxidative stress, modulate inflammation, and promote overall well-being. It is also considered an ally in preventing neurodegenerative diseases, enhancing cognitive function, and protecting the brain from aging. Extra virgin olive oil is also a fundamental pillar of the global economy, particularly for Mediterranean producing countries such as Spain, Turkey, Tunisia, Greece, Portugal, and Italy.
According to ISMEA estimates for the 2024/25 olive oil season, global olive oil production will reach 3.1 million tons, up from 2.5 million tons last year. However, this growth is insufficient to offset the severe losses of the previous two years. While Spain expects a return to normal with around 1.35 million tons, the situation in Italy is more challenging. With production not exceeding 220,000 tons, Italy anticipates a 32% decline compared to the previous season, ranking fifth globally. This drop is largely attributed to climate change, which is stressing crops, and droughts that have severely impacted olive groves.
This production instability is creating challenges throughout the supply chain. Bottlers are facing increasingly uncertain supplies, complicating inventory management and planning. Consumers are feeling the impact, with prices nearly doubling in just two years, making olive oil less affordable. This is paradoxical given the health benefits outlined above.

It is no coincidence that extra virgin olive oil is an essential ingredient in the Mediterranean Diet, celebrated worldwide for its health benefits. More than just a list of foods, this diet promotes a balanced intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes, animal proteins, and olive oil as the key to a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
